Put a ball of foil in the dishwasher. Here’s why

Tarnish is a common problem for silverware, caused by the oxidation of silver when it comes into contact with sulfur compounds in the air or in food. This oxidation results in a dull, discolored appearance. When a ball of aluminum foil is placed in the dishwasher, it acts as a sacrificial anode. In simple terms, the tarnish is transferred from the silver to the aluminum.

This process is facilitated by the presence of dishwashing detergent, which contains alkaline salts. These salts help to create an environment where the aluminum can effectively attract the sulfur compounds away from the silver, thus reversing the tarnish. The result is that, after a wash cycle, the silverware appears much shinier.

The underlying science of this hack involves a redox reaction, where the aluminum serves as a reducing agent. When aluminum comes into contact with the detergent, particularly those containing phosphates, it begins to oxidize. This oxidation process releases electrons, which are then transferred to the silver sulfide (tarnish) on the silverware.

The electrons convert the silver sulfide back into silver, while the sulfur combines with the aluminum to form aluminum sulfide. This reaction is more favorable under the conditions provided by a dishwasher, such as heat and agitation. The process is similar to the traditional method of cleaning silver with aluminum foil and baking soda, but the dishwasher hack is more convenient for everyday cleaning.

To create the foil ball, tear off a piece of aluminum foil approximately 12 inches long. Crumple the foil into a tight ball, about the size of a golf ball, ensuring there are no sharp edges that could damage the dishwasher or other items.

Place the foil ball either in the cutlery basket or on the top rack of the dishwasher. It’s important to ensure the ball is secure and won’t move around during the wash cycle, as this could cause damage. Add your regular detergent and start the wash cycle as usual. By the end of the cycle, you should notice a visible improvement in the shine of your silverware.

The foil ball hack is particularly effective for cleaning tarnished silverware, such as forks, spoons, and knives that are made of silver or are silver-plated. It’s also useful for certain types of stainless steel cutlery that have developed discoloration over time.

However, it’s important to note that this hack is not suitable for aluminum items, as the reaction could potentially lead to further oxidation and damage to the aluminum. Glassware and ceramics will not benefit from the foil ball, as they do not tarnish like metals.

While the foil ball hack is safe for many types of silverware, there are certain items that should never be placed in the dishwasher with a foil ball. Avoid washing fine china or delicate glassware with this method, as the agitation could cause damage.

Also, do not use this hack with non-stick cookware, as the aluminum could cause the coating to deteriorate. Aluminum cookware or utensils should not be placed in the dishwasher with a foil ball, as the same reaction that removes tarnish could cause corrosion to the aluminum items themselves.
