Never leave your charger plugged into the socket without your phone attached! My electrician warned me about this, and I wish I did this sooner! Here’s why

It’s easy to focus on convenience when life gets busy, but sometimes the smallest everyday habits can make a big difference for both safety and expenses. One common habit many people have is leaving phone chargers plugged into the wall even when they’re not charging a device. It might seem harmless, but after speaking with an expert, I learned that this isn’t a good idea.

“Never leave your charger plugged into the outlet without your phone connected!” my electrician warned. After hearing the explanation, I realized it’s a simple change that can make a real difference.

Below is a closer look at why unplugging your charger when it’s not in use matters for your home and your devices.

1. Lowering the Risk of Fire

The most important reason to unplug a charger is safety. Even if it’s not connected to a phone, a charger that remains in the outlet is still active and drawing a small amount of electricity. If the charger is damaged, cheaply made, or exposed to a sudden power surge, it can overheat.

In some situations, that overheating can cause sparks or even start a fire. My electrician explained that “small device, big risk” is something people often underestimate. Low-quality or unbranded chargers are especially risky because they may lack proper safety components. Without these protections, they can melt or fail unexpectedly.

Overheating: Chargers naturally produce heat while plugged in. If they’re hidden behind furniture or under fabrics with little airflow, the heat can build up until internal parts fail.

Short circuits: Worn wiring inside the charger can eventually create a short circuit, increasing the risk of electrical problems in your home.
