classic Black Forest cake

4 cups pitted cherries (fresh or canned)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon lemon juice
For the whipped cream:
2 cups heavy cream
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For decoration:
Chocolate shavings
Additional cherries
Instructions:
1.Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
2.In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
3.Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes. Stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, but that’s normal.
