Beef and Gravy with Mashed Potatoes

How to Make It

1. Brown the Beef

Heat olive oil in a skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high. Add the ground beef (or stew meat) and cook until browned. If using stew meat, sear until all sides are golden. Set the beef aside once cooked through.

2. Sauté the Onion and Garlic

Using the same pan, cook the diced onion until it turns soft and translucent—about 3–4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

3. Create the Gravy

Sprinkle flour over the onion and garlic and stir to form a roux. Let it cook for 1–2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in the beef broth to create a smooth sauce. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, herbs, salt, and pepper. Add the beef back in and let everything simmer for 5–10 minutes until the gravy thickens.

4. Make the Mashed Potatoes

Place the potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt. Boil, then reduce to a simmer for 15–20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and return to the pot. Add butter and milk, then mash until smooth and fluffy. Season to taste.

5. Assemble and Serve

Scoop mashed potatoes onto a plate or bowl. Top generously with the beef and gravy. Add Parmesan or chives if you’d like a garnish. Serve warm and enjoy every comforting bite.
