What was meant to be a quick lunch turned into a nightmare for Julien, a landscape painter from Toulouse. On October 15, he purchased an “American tuna salad” from an Aldi supermarket — only to discover something deeply unsettling inside.
A Strange Taste and a Shocking Find
After a few bites, Julien noticed a sour, fermenting flavor. Looking closer into the jar, he was horrified to see two small white worms wriggling among the tuna, corn, and tomato.
“My very first reaction was to vomit. I had to throw up what I had eaten,” he told La Dépêche du Midi. Julien later posted a video of the discovery on social media.
Reporting the Incident
Julien and a colleague quickly went back to the Aldi store to report the contamination. While staff offered him a refund, he made clear that money was not the issue.
“The real problem is not the money. It’s that nobody knows whether it was just my jar or more of them. That’s what’s truly worrying.”
Health Fears and Medical Advice
Still shaken, Julien contacted emergency services for reassurance. News of recent botulism outbreaks was fresh in his mind.
“I was afraid of getting seriously sick. I remembered the cases of botulism from last month — five people were in intensive care after eating contaminated pesto.”
Fortunately, doctors confirmed that Julien had no symptoms and only needed to stay alert for signs of illness.
